Our choices - Environment
A healthier tomorrow begins today.
At Origins, we believe the well-being of our planet is vital to the well-being of the people who populate it. And we do whatever we can to protect the earth and its resources.

Origins was among the first major brands to practice sustainability. Sustainability is defined as an attempt to provide the best outcomes for human society and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future. Sustainability means resolving the conflict between the two competing goals: the sustenance of human life and the integrity of nature.

We lead by example in all aspects of our business operations and among our employees, suppliers and customers.

We believe that reducing pollution means increasing efficiency and wasting fewer resources. It can also improve health resulting in a more productive workforce. That's why Origins manufacturing facilities have instituted Environmental Management Systems that comply with the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). They are designed to improve our environmental performance and avoid or reduce adverse environmental impacts over time.

All of our packaging has always been printed on recycled paper using soy-based inks.

Our cartons are made from 50% Forest Stewardship Council certified paperboard and 50% post-consumer recycled fibre. These paperboards and cartons are manufactured using wind power or hydro power, both renewable energy resources. In a given year, Origins uses approximately 192,000 lbs of this paper in place of virgin fibre. In doing so, we preserve 922 trees for the future, save 391,740 gallons of wastewater flow, and conserve 653,245,400 BTUs of energy. And we prevent 84,398 lbs of net greenhouse gases.

For its stand-alone retail stores in the UK, Origins has purchased Kyoto* compliant emissions credits in the form of EU Allowances via its partner McKinnon & Clarke Ltd. The retirement of these credits from the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme has offset the electricity Origins uses in its retail operations. Origins is partnering with Community Energy Inc. to purchase wind generated power to offset electricity used in its North American stand-alone retail stores. Wind energy is a natural, inexhaustible source of energy that requires no fuel and produces no pollution. By purchasing wind power for our retail stores, Origins will use less grid electricity, achieving a CO2 reduction equivalent to planting 788,589 trees or removing 825 cars from the road. And by helping to fund the building of additional turbines with Community Energy to supply electricity to Origins manufacturing operations, we will achieve a further reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to planting 61,486 trees or not driving 783,945 miles in a car on an annual basis. Origins has been recognised as one of the top 30 companies by the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership as a result of its purchasing of 100 percent green power. Combined, these purchases amount to more than 3 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually.

Origins popular Shedonism™ and Ginger Essence™ fragrances are filled in a facility where 40% of the electricity is powered from an on-site 600 kW solar energy system.

Our new eco-chic store design continues our commitment to sustainability by featuring earth-friendly materials, low energy lighting, low emission paints, live plants and all natural river rock.

Our products are transported in recycled cardboard shippers using recyclable packing materials. We use no Styrofoam peanuts or any PVCs (Poly vinyl chloride) in our packaging materials.

And we continue to seek alternative ways to use the earth's natural resources imaginatively, intelligently, respectfully and responsibly.
Origins Organics Recycling programme
Origins Organics™ is the first prestige full line of skin, body and hair products certified organic by USDA National Organics Programme.

One of the biggest challenges that organic products face is how to preserve them without the use of artificial preservatives. Due to the delicate nature of our formulas, three of the products in the Origins Organics™ collections will be packaged in airless containers in order to help preserve them naturally. These products include Foaming Face Wash, Nourishing Face Lotion and Hydrating Body Lotion.

Unfortunately as a result of the technology used in these three packages, it is not possible to recycle them at home through your normal recycling process. In fact, the bottle and the overcap are made of recyclable material but in order to recycle the bottle, the package needs to be broken open.

In order to help you recycle these products easily, please be sure to return them to your nearest Origins Retail or Department Store so that we can separate the parts and recycle them properly. Packages will be sent to a reclamation center where they will be taken apart and separated by material type for recycling. Also, we are working with our suppliers to develop an alternative for airless packaging.

Origins was a pioneer in recycling during the 1990s. And we are committed to helping the environment in every way we can.
Thank you for your support
