Best friends Persia and Joey set up Addictive Daughter an alternative, positive online space offering honest life advice. Here they guide you through their top tips  for surviving  your 20’s.

Tip 1: Crisis Or Opportunity?

The Chinese word for crisis is made up of two characters – one signifying ‘danger’, and the other ‘opportunity’. Our twenties and thirties are the launch pad to the rest of our lives; the decisions we make in them will dramatically impact where we are in ten years time. Working through them now provides you with the opportunity to make some much needed changes that your future self will thank you for.

Tip 2: Focus On Your Insides

When you’re a 20-something trying to discover who you are and what you want from life, it’s really easy to get seduced by society’s prevalent message that striving for external stuff (the latest iPhone, expensive yoga pants, the ideal partner, your dream career, a lavish home), will bring you the happiness and success you’re seeking. Although those things are nice, our personal experience has been that even when things look good from the outside, they don’t necessarily feel good within. If you focus on creating a full and healthy inner life, the external stuff will naturally fall into place.

Tip 3: Invest In The Skin You’re In

Many of us will spend extortionate amounts of money on a new dress, which lasts for a relatively short amount of time - and we might only wear a handful of times. Yet, we often neglect the body underneath it. It’s important to be mindful of what we put in to our body – and who we choose to share it with. We only get one body to last us a lifetime, so build your health on solid foundations and take responsibility for, it starting today.

Tip 4: Easy Does It

From our own experience, having a punishing and rigid approach to wellness and ‘sorting your life out’ doesn’t work long-term: self-love and acceptance needs to come first which, in turn, positively affects the choices you go on to make. The trick isn’t to aim to be perfect, but, instead, to commit to speaking to and treating yourself as you would a friend you love.

Tip 5: Keep It In The Day

With so many choices and options available to us nowadays (particularly in our quarter-life years, when most of us have fewer responsibilities tying us down), it’s easy to become overwhelmed when it comes to decision-making. We’ve found it incredibly helpful to remember that whilst it’s good to have dreams, desires and goals for the future, life is most manageable when you focus mainly on the day you’re living in. Set yourself small, manageable daily tasks to move you in the direction you want to be heading in.
